TACOMA —

A bomb squad blew apart a device found Thursday at the Pierce County bus yard, rendering it safe after the bus yard and some nearby homes were evacuated.

Bomb Squad Renders Device Safe

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News it's not clear if the device was a bomb or something designed to look like a bomb, but it had metal shards embedded into it "designed to hurt people, maim people," he said.

Troyer said deputies didn't know how the device got into the bus yard, but it could have been tossed over a fence.

The item was found at 96th and South Tacoma Way about 3:30 p.m.

Video from Chopper 7 showed a member of the bomb squad in a protective suit working on the device, then backing off.

Authorities said the device may have been left there after a meth bust at a nearby pool hall.
