Bones Belong To Green River Killer Victim

ENUMCLAW, Wash. —

Bones found near Enumclaw over the weekend are those of a girl missing since 1983 and believed to be a victim of the Green River Killer, the King County Medical Examiner's Office says.

The skeletal remains belong to Pammy Annette Avent, who was 16 years old when she disappeared on October 26, 1983, after leaving her home in Seattle.

Medical examiners identified the remains through dental records. The cause and manner of death were pending, the King County medical examiner's office said.

Detectives found small bones, possibly vertebrae, Sunday morning at the spot where remains were found on Saturday.

Victim Identified, 20 Years Later

On Saturday, about 60 volunteers joined detectives in searching the site, a wooded area down an embankment at milepost 26 on State Route 410 east of Enumclaw, which is about 34 miles southeast of Seattle.

Officials would not say whether Gary Ridgway, who is charged with aggravated first-degree murder in the deaths of seven Green River victims, directed authorities to look there.

Ridgway, 54, of Auburn has pleaded innocent and is scheduled to go on trial in July 2004. The seven women he is accused of killing are among the Green River victims.

Lawyers and investigators have refused to confirm whether Ridgway is cooperating with authorities in exchange for a plea deal that could spare his life.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported that in mid-June, Ridgway was transferred out of jail and to Western State Hospital. From there, on multiple occasions, Ridgway accompanied Green River Task Force detectives and prosecutors to what were described as "dump sites."
