SEATTLE —

State Democratic Chairman Paul Berendt won a

sixth term Saturday in Olympia, while Republican Chris Vance was

elected for his third term in Tukwila.

Both men have been at the center of the vortex swirling around

the state governor's race as the GOP's Dean Rossi challenges

Christine Gregoire's 129-vote edge in a hand recount of the tight

race.

Berendt won 100 of the 169 votes cast. King County

Chairman Gary Rodriguez followed with 44, while Snohomish County

activist Bill Phillips had 18 and former Snohomish County

Chairwoman Kat Overman had eight.

Vance won a solid majority on the first ballot. He said the

party wasn't releasing the number of ballots cast for each

candidate.
