PUYALLUP, Wash. —

The 2-year-old boy who was swept away in the Greenwater River on Friday was an officer’s son, the Puyallup Police Department said.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported Saturday that the officer was on duty when his unit was called to the scene to respond to reports of a child taken away in the river.

The child’s father has been a Puyallup Police Officer for four and a half years, the department said. His mother is a law enforcement with a different agency as well.

The department said chaplains responded to Greenwater and to the Puyallup Police Department to provide grief counseling for family, friends and coworkers.

The Puyallup Police Association is in the process of establishing a memorial fund for the family’s funeral expenses for those that wish to donate.
