Boys Arrested In Deadly Tacoma Shooting

TACOMA, Wash. —

Police have arrested a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old who are suspected of shooting a Tacoma man in a robbery that turned deadly last Sunday.

Police said surveillance videotape helped lead them to the suspects.

Dong Won, 37, of Tacoma, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Medical Center two days after he was shot while trying to flee the robbery.

Sunday night, Won waited in the car while his wife went into the store and, when she returned, a young man who also had been in the store apparently followed her and slipped into the back of the vehicle, police said.

After the woman drove a short distance, she and her husband leaped from the car and started to run but Won was felled by a single shot to the head, police said.

The young man then reportedly ran to a parked car at the store and entered through the passenger-side window, after which the car sped off.

The 14-year-old suspect appeared in court Wednesday.

A man representing a civil rights group said the boy's mother called them, saying her son was in the store when the shooting happened.

"They arrested him cause of the camera his picture was on the camera in the store, when it all happened, that' pretty much why they arrested him," said Abdullah Mustafa of the National Action Network.

Police agreed the 14-year-old was in the store when the shooting took place, but said he was still under arrest on suspicion of murder.

"It's a violent crime no matter who was involved, but for two people that young it's a big concern for us," said Mark Fulghum of the Tacoma Police Department.
