Boys Found Safe Following Amber Alert

SEATTLE —

Police found two young boys safe at a Hoquiam residence Monday, the morning after they were taken by a man described as the despondent, recently jailed father of one and the uncle of the other.

Damien M. Jardine, 4 1/2, and Dalton J. Finn, 3, were discovered along with the older boy's father, Marc E. Jardine, 27, who is a Grays Harbor County jail inmate on furlough, Seattle Police officer Sean Whitcomb said. The trio had last been seen at 6 p.m. Sunday in Lacey.

Jardine was released temporarily following a fire that killed another of his sons and injured that son's mother. On Sunday night, he was driving in a family caravan headed to visit her in Seattle when "he suddenly makes this left turn and speeds off," Whitcomb said.

Relatives tried to follow him but couldn't keep up, then alerted authorities because they were concerned about his mental state, Whitcomb said. Police issued an Amber Alert early Monday and soon received information that Jardine might be at a residence in Hoquiam.

The younger boy was returned to his mother, while the older boy remained with his father, who was questioned by Hoquiam Police Monday.

Whitcomb said he didn't know why Jardine had been in jail but added, "there's a history of drug use."

The national Amber Alert system for children who may have been abducted and in imminent danger is named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, who was killed after being kidnapped while riding her bicycle near her home in 1996.
