Cab driver victim of racially-motivated assault in Belltown

SEATTLE —

A man was jailed Sunday in what Seattle police said was a racially motivated assault on a cab driver in Belltown.

Investigators said the violence occurred about 3:30 a.m. at Fourth Avenue and Cedar Street in Seattle when a drunken white man got into a taxi and asked the cabbie what race he was.

When the driver said he was Indian, the man punched him in the face, detectives said.

“I've heard about people punching cab drivers over money, but not over the origin of a cab driver,” said cabbie Ibrahim Kimeel.

The man was arrested and jailed.

The victim suffered a cut above his eye, but declined medical treatment.
