TACOMA, Wash. —

Tacoma police said a driver fleeing from officers drove through a fence, plunged down an embankment and became airborne before crashing onto Interstate 5.

The incident began when a man who police said was driving recklessly hit a vehicle at 11th Avenue and Yakima Street and then fled.

A patrol officer witnessed the incident and pursued the driver.

As the driver approached the freeway overpass, he veered through Department of Transportation fencing at about 35 mph, launched about 60 feet onto southbound I-5, crashed across all lanes and hit three cars.

The man, who was the only one injured in the crash, was taken into custody. Police said he was sedated for surgery.

Police said they did not find identification with the man.

Video from Chopper 7 showed the damage to the suspect's car. One side of the vehicle was demolished and the windshield was shattered.
