Car Plummets Off Viaduct Offramp

SEATTLE —

A car crashed through a guardrail on the Seneca Street offramp while exiting from the Alaskan Way Viaduct Monday morning and fell four stories to the street below, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Video from Chopper 7 showed the car had landed on its roof on Seneca Street and First Avenue in downtown Seattle.

Fire and rescue crews responded to the scene. Seattle police said the driver was not seriously hurt.

The car was traveling northbound on the viaduct and took the Seneca Street exit when it crashed through the guardrail and landed partially upside down on a trash bin, which cushioned the impact of the falling vehicle.

The driver said his car's brakes failed so he purposefully aimed for the guardrail to slow down the momentum of his vehicle.

Witnesses who saw the man crawl out from his car said it was a miracle he survived.

“The man is so incredibly lucky,” said one witness.
