Warming up your car on cold mornings can get you in trouble in Pierce County.

Cold Weather Car Thefts

With recent cold weather, car thefts are skyrocketing all over the Puget Sound area.

More than eight cars are stolen every day in Tacoma alone, so police are cracking down on car owners who leave their vehicles running unattended.

Tacoma police left warning notices for drivers who left their cars running Tuesday morning. Next week, officers will write start writing $87 tickets.

It is illegal to leave your car running with no one inside.

So far this year, in 2003, 564 cars have been stolen in Tacoma. Fifty six of those -- about 10 percent -- were stolen while their owners were warming up the vehicles.
