Chase Of Stolen Newspaper Van Ends In Crash

SEATTLE —

Police are investigating the theft of a Seattle Times newspaper van that they said led them on a high-speed chase over four local freeways and ended in a head-on crash with a car near Boeing Field early Monday, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Snohomish County sheriff's deputies said they responded to a report of the theft of the van in Bothell as it was happening.

Officers said before the van was stolen, there was some sort of altercation between the driver of the van and the car thief at about 1:30 a.m.

The driver of the stolen van fled down Interstate 405, Highway 520 and Interstate 5 to Seattle where it left the freeway near Boeing Field and crashed into a car head-on.

Police said speeds in the chase hit more than 100 mph at times, and a Snohomish County sheriff's car was damaged in an unsuccessful maneuver to stop the driver at the Boeing Access Road.

The car thief was taken into custody and transported to Harborview Medical Center for unknown injuries, where a Snohomish County sheriff's officer remained on guard, police said.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Rick Price said he saw that officer leave the hospital at about 5 a.m.

Two people who were in the car the van struck were not hurt, Price said.

The driver of the Seattle Times van suffered minor injuries during the altercation with the car thief, but declined treatment.
