Chicken Jerky treat linked to dog deaths, illnesses

A popular dog treat has killed and sickened dogs.

The Food and Drug Administration says Chicken Jerky treats -- especially those made in China -- are dangerous.

"In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China," the FDA said in a news release. "These complaints have been reported to FDA by dog owners and veterinarians."

A local vet told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that pet owners need to look at the ingredients and make sure they are made in the U. S., for the safety of dogs and children.

"When children pick it up, or it's left chewed on or whatever in the house, these things can be transmitted also to children," said Dr. Jayne Jensen.

The treats were found at a local Costco.

Costco defended its product, telling KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that every treat is irradiated to kill anything that might harm a dog and each shipment is checked for microbial contamination.  Costco said Chinese plants are inspected twice a year.

Costco said the treats are safe but high in protein, so they shouldn't take place of regular dog food.
