BREMERTON, Wash. —

The 29-year-old man suspected in the rape of children in East Bremerton last week made his first court appearance Wednesday, revealing to his victims and the public a face surprisingly similar to the police sketch of the attacker.

Gregory Edward Monroe of Silverdale is held on $1 million bail for investigation of rape, burglary, assault and unlawful imprisonment. Police say he raped two 11-year-old girls at an East Bremerton home last Thursday.

Investigators say he's a match for the police sketch released last week, a drawing based on descriptions by the children who survived the ordeal.

The attack happened last Thursday shortly after the girls arrived from school. The sheriff's office says a man raped them and tied them up and then tied up three teen-agers as they arrived.

The intruder fled when the stepfather arrived home.

The victims gave inspectors a good description of the man, including a distinctive shoulder tattoo.

Court documents say Monroe admits he was in the victims' home and carrying a knife last Thursday.
