Classmates Mourn 13-Year-Old Killed While Crossing Street

AUBURN, Wash. —

Classmates of a 13-year-old who was killed while crossing the street in Auburn last week held a tribute for the boy Monday night.

Students gathered at Rainier Middle School to share their memories of Brandon Hefty, who was struck by a garbage truck last Thursday.

"He was my best friend. (I) still can't believe he's gone, but I'm going to have to deal with it," said Rett Bruce.

Students released balloons in Hefty's favorite colors -- Seahawks and Mariners blue and green.

The principal said students are dropping notes in Hefty's locker -- memories and messages for his family that will be collected and taken to the family.

Funeral plans are expected to be announced on Tuesday.
