Cleanup Continues Following Storm

SEATTLE —

As piles of snow and icy streets continue to melt, plows are out working around the clock in some areas and garbage pickup is starting to resume Monday.

One such area that is still fighting the snow is the Cottage Lake area of Woodinville, where many streets are still covered with snow but plows were out overnight in an effort to clear them.

"This is off the charts. We're exhausted, we're working 21 days straight through the holiday, doing 12 hour shifts, with 24 hour coverage," said snow plow driver Jennifer Lindquist.

King County moved crews from other parts of the county to work in the area to clear many roads before the morning commute.

County officials said crews will be plowing there through Monday evening and beyond, if necessary.

Meanwhile, those who haven't had garbage collection for at least a week because of the snow storm could be getting rid of their trash soon.

Officials said they'll collect garbage and recycling as scheduled today in Seattle, Ballard, and Auburn.

Customers in Seattle who were missed last week can put out additional trash at no extra charge.

In addition, postal carriers are expected to get back on their normal routes after many areas were without mail service for a week.

Delivery was irregular as postal carriers tried to navigate through snow and icy roads.

The hardest-hit areas were Bellevue, Redmond, Queen Anne Hill, West Seattle and parts of the Rainier Valley.

The Northgate post office, however, has moved operations to the Lake City due to fears of the building's roof collapsing, possibly due to snow buildup.

Post office spokesman Ernie Swanson said employees at the Northgate branch last Friday noticed a water leak in the building. The landlord who leases the building was concerned that the roof might collapse.

It is not known how long the branch will be closed.

Drivers heading for mountain passes should be aware of three storms heading for the mountains this week.

Forecasters said several feet of snow could be seen in the Cascades.

On Monday morning, Snoqualmie Pass had snow and slush while Stevens Pass had compact snow and slush. There's frost and ice across White Pass.

Traction tires were advised across all three mountain passes Monday morning.
