SAHALE MOUNTAIN, Wash. —
A woman was seriously injured after she was struck by a boulder Saturday in the North Cascades National Park, according to the National Park Service.
The incident happened when the woman was climbing with another partner near the summit of Sahale Peak, where both were hit by the rock.
The more injured climber had to be lifted off the glacier to a nearby parking lot, and she was flown to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition.
“He just accidently triggered the rock fall. He placed his hand on a medium sized rock. Just that little pressure dislodged it from the mountain and it rolled down,” said North Cascades National Park Wilderness Ranger Kevork Arackellian. “It hit his knee, hit his partner pretty bad. It's one of those accidents that you can't really predict or do much about."
Both climbers had to get themselves down before the chopper could reach the two and evacuate them.
