Monday will mark the 30^th anniversary of one of Seattle’s deadliest shootings.

Thirteen people were shot during a night of gambling at the Wah Mee, a private Chinese club, in the International District in Maynard Alley.

One person survived and he led police to three people.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Deborah Horne spoke with Djin Liem, who owns a tropical fish store next door to the club, and he said he should have been at work when the shooting happened.

“That day, I had nothing to do. So I go home,” said Liem.

Liem thinks that spared his life.

Bob Santos, who has lived or worked in the International District nearly his entire life, learned about the shooting the next day.  

“We think about the Wah Mee. Wah Mee. We go by the alley, you know, almost every day and then just the memory comes up about some of the people that we knew,” Santos said.

Santos said most people wanted to forget about the shooting because it seemed the only time this neighborhood got noticed was because of the tragedy.

“And our community was bigger than that. It was on people’s mind, but we didn’t talk about it,” Santos said.

The three people involved with the shooting remain in prison.
