Convicted Killer Gets 48 Years In Prison

SEATTLE —

Michael Maiava, 24, was convicted and sentenced to nearly 48 years in prison for the beating and stabbing death of 44-year-old Kevin Shaw in October of 2004.

According to court documents, Maiava killed Shaw after meeting him on a gay chat line.

Maiava beat and strangled Shaw after stabbing him in the head with an ice pick, and then wrapped his nude body and left it in Shaw's Porsche where it was found two days later.

Shaw's family still can't believe the tragedy. "His death was senseless and tragic, and I just can't believe it happened," said Ed Shaw, Kevin's father.

Judge Theresa Doyle sentenced Maiava to 572 months behind bars, "The crime here was an unprovoked, cruel, completely in this court's opinion, senseless murder of a man who by all accounts was really a lovely person," Judge Doyle said.
