SHELTON, Wash. —

The Mason County coroner has identified the man authorities said assaulted a woman in her Belfair home and then set the house on fire, killing himself.

The man is Robin Louis Black Cloud, the coroner told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Richard Thompson.

Black Cloud died Feb. 22, just two days short of his 52nd birthday.

Authorities said the woman was severely beaten by Black Cloud, who then got into a standoff with police.

A review of 911 tapes in the case showed that the attacker apparently waited until the victim's husband left on a trip to California before he attacked her, authorities said.

During the standoff, police surrounded the house and fired tear gas canisters inside. Black Cloud refused to come out, and instead fired shots then set the house on fire, police said.

Flames quickly engulfed the structure.

Earlier, detectives said the man responsible for the attack had a lengthy criminal history including assault and robbery. Police said the man had so many aliases that they were not immediately able to determine his true identity.
