CLE ELUM, Washington —
As crews continue to battle the Taylor Bridge Fire, those who have lost their homes are coping as best they can, but one family in Cle Elum may be dealing with a double tragedy.
Lon Lewis and Kathryn Anderson are staying with friends in a house near the downtown area. They were able to escape the fire, which torched Anderson’s farm near Ellensburg, with two vintage cars.
“I raised my grandson there. I raised my daughter there,” Anderson said.
But that’s just the beginning of their journey.
The home they know live in, in Sunlight Waters, is under threat. The couple was given only minutes to evacuate that home, and they knew they had to get the cars out.
“If we lose everything, we can sell those and rebuild,” Lewis said.
What’s been tough, they said, is that they have to grieve the loss of one home while not knowing about the fate of the other. They said they’re grateful for their friends, Butch and Wilma Phillips, who have given them stability during their rollercoaster waiting period.
“They were the ones who came in the middle of the morning and helped us get our things out of there, and – they’re great,” Anderson said.
Just as KIRO 7 was wrapping up an interview with the couple, another friend called and told them their second house is still standing. However, they’re not out of the woods yet.
