Couple Tied Up, Home Ransacked In Craigslist Ad Robbery

SEATTLE —

A Lake Stevens couple said they were tied up and their home was ransacked Sunday by two men who said they were responding to a Craigslist ad.

The same two men are suspected to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a man during another home invasion in Edgewood on Wednesday night.

The Lake Stevens couple said around 10 p.m. Sunday, two men arrived at their home saying they were responding to a Craigslist ad for a flat-screen TV.

Police said the two men brandished weapons, tied up the husband and threw a blanket over him. Police said the men then went upstairs and tied up the man’s wife. The couple’s 6-month-old was asleep in his crib.

In less than 10 minutes, police said the robbers ransacked the victim’s home taking electronics, jewelry and a large amount of Iraq currency in $5,000 denominations that the husband bought while serving in the Army.

Police said a third man and a woman were waiting in a pickup truck outside the Lake Stevens home.

The husband spoke with KIRO 7 North Sound reporter Lee Stoll and when asked how they stayed safe, “I stayed calm,” he said.

"They just told them take what you want and get out," said the couple's neighbor Kristi Warter.

The couple said the two men did not make attempts to hide their identity. One man is described as an African-American man, 18 to 24 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a thin build and a goatee. The second man is described as Asian/African-American, 18 to 24 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, around 170 pounds, with a thin build and a tattoo on his neck.

Police have not released descriptions of the third man and the woman.

In Wednesday's robbery and fatal shooting in Edgewood, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer told KIRO 7 that three men and a woman came to the home at about 9:30 p.m. saying they were there to look at a diamond ring the family was trying to sell on Craigslist.

After one showed cash to the homeowner, the four entered the home, police said. Once inside, they held the family at gunpoint and pistol-whipped a 14-year-old boy, police said. When the boy's father intervened, an attacker shot 43-year-old Jim Sanders in the head, police said.

Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene. His son was taken to a local hospital. His injuries are not known.

Police said the victims in both incidents appear to have been targeted solely for their Craigslist ads.
