Court Seeks People Who Were Strip-Searched At Pierce Jail

TACOMA, Wash. —

A court is looking for people who were strip-searched at the Pierce County Jail and who might be part of a class action lawsuit against the county.

Abra Plemmons, who was jailed there for five hours in March 2002 while awaiting bail on forgery charges, was the subject of an automatic strip search.

It turned out she was the innocent victim of an identity theft.

The county changed the policy a year and a half later, before an appellate court found the strip search policy to be illegal.

Plemmons sued, and two separate courts have found in her favor.

Because what happened was the result of a policy, the court is trying to determine how much she is due and who else is entitled to damages.

A mediation session is scheduled for October. If that fails to produce a settlement, the case could go to trial next year.
