Craigslist Ad Leads To Hate Mail

SEATTLE —

A local woman is in the middle of a scam controversy involving the Web site Craigslist.com after she placed an ad trying to help her brother’s family following the California wildfires.

Leah Galindo said her brother David and his family left their Running Springs, Calif. home during the fires. When the family returned, their home had been reduced to a pile of rubble.

Galindo said she wanted to help so she launched a fundraiser linked to a local bank on Craigslist.

“I got hate mail, saying that I was a scam artist and I’m trying to take advantage of the families,” said Galindo.

Galindo replied to every message by sending pictures of what used to be her brother’s home but because so many people complained, the Web site pulled her listing.

“I think how it’s really going to hurt the family who really are in need,” said Galindo.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News wrote to Craigslist, asking if they might re-post the ad, but no reply has been received.

KIRO has received e-mails from viewers who would like to donate.
