TACOMA, Wash. —
For a long time Pierce County has been trying to get the word out to businesses and residents that signs staked into the ground or stapled to telephone poles are illegal but now they are taking action.
Starting Wednesday, road crews began removing illegally-placed signs along roadways and intersections; an operation that will cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.
The cleanup is expected to take a few weeks and after that crews will remove any new signs and track down the offenders. Officials said that these signs are being considered litter and anyone who continues to post signs may be ticketed and fined.
Pierce County said they have done cleanups like this before and given owners of the signs an opportunity to retrieve their signs but this time they will just be throwing them away or recycling them. Officials say that during past cleanups, crews have removed over 16,000 illegally-posted signs.
