Crews respond to oil spill at Port of Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. —

A tanker truck on a vessel ruptured and spilled oil at the Port of Tacoma, according to the Department of Ecology.

The spill happened in the Blair Waterway, where the tanker truck was on board the MV Midnight Sun.

According to the Department of Ecology, the truck was hit by another vehicle, which caused the tanker to rupture.

The U.S. Coast Guard, along with Washington’s Department of Ecology, responded to scene.

One of the tanker truck’s four compartments held 1,500 gallons of oil, which emptied on the deck of the vessel.

About 50 gallons spilled into the Blair Waterway and most of the oil was contained on the deck, officials said.

Clean up crews and a private contractor, NRCES, worked on clearing up the oil.

State and federal responders will return to the site to reassess the spill.
