Deputies: Man with pitchfork chases mother, torches house

YELM, Wash. —

A Yelm woman whose son threatened her with a pitchfork barricaded herself in a bathroom and escaped through a window before he set their house on fire, Thurston County sheriff's deputies told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Deputies said the fight began early Friday morning in the home in the 14200 block of 130th Lane near Yelm. The 26-year-old man threatened to cut off his mother's head, chasing her through the house with the pitchfork.

She fled into a bathroom, broke a window, crawled through it and ran to safety, deputies told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News South Sound reporter Richard Thompson.

When deputies arrived, the man was still inside the home. They noticed smoke, and he came out.

Deputies said it appeared the man started fires at several locations in the house. The house is a total loss, they said.

By 9:30 a.m., deputies were waiting for firefighters to cool off hot spots before looking for evidence, including the pitchfork.
