KENT, Wash. —

The families of two men who were shot and killed by the same Federal Way police officer are planning a vigil outside the officer's inquest hearing Tuesday.

Federal Way Police Officer Matthew Leitgib told the six-member inquest jury Monday that he feared for his life last August as he was chasing Jedidiah Waters, who was suspected of shoplifting at a Walmart in Federal Way.

The 29-year-old was running through the parking lot when he reached for a gun in an ankle holster, Leitgib said.

Leitgib pulled his own gun and fired numerous times, killing Waters.

Family members said the officer used excessive force.

“My biggest thing is they shot him 11 times.  Why did they have to shoot him so many times?" said Water’s aunt, Brandee Brown-Chavez.

Waters’ family members said they are also upset because Leitgib shot and killed another suspect, 23-year-old David Young, a year earlier.

In that case, Letigib said he fired because he feared Young was going to run over him with a stolen pickup truck.

An inquest jury in that case decided there was reason for Leitgib to worry for his safety.

The two families will hold the vigil at 12:15 p.m. outside the Kent Regional Justice Center.
