MOUNT VERNON, Wash. —
U.S. Marshals shot and killed a fugitive in Mount Vernon on Thursday afternoon, police said.
According to the Mount Vernon Police Department, the fugitive was a 26-year-old man with an extensive criminal history. He was wanted on charges of second-degree assault out of the Washington State Department of Corrections.
The fugitive was spotted riding on his bicycle at about 2:40 p.m. in the 400 block of LaVenture Road. He fired at officers. The officers fired back, and he was struck and killed, said police.
Lt. Chris Cammock of the Mount Vernon PD spoke with KIRO 7's Gary Horcher about the shooting.
"He was spotted on the bike on this roadway that we're on. He then saw the marshal. He turned and saw more marshals," said Cammock. "At that point, he drew in and began firing at them, and they returned fire, as well. And that's where it ended."
No one else was injured, and LaVenture Road was closed off down to Cascade Street.
The Washington State Patrol is assisting the Mount Vernon police in the investigation.
