SEATTLE —
Two days after police said Josh Powell took his life and the lives of his two boys in a planned explosion at his home, investigators are still sifting through information in the apparent double murder-suicide and in the two-year-old case of Powell’s missing wife, Susan Cox Powell.
Officials revealed for the first time Tuesday that police have been investigating Susan Powell’s disappearance as a murder for several months.
Salt Lake County (Utah) District Attorney Sam Gill made the acknowledgement to the Associated Press and said his office believes Susan Powell is dead.
"I think when I talk about it as a missing persons case, that's because we haven't located the body of Susan Powell," Gill told the AP. "Do we think that she may have met harm? Sure.
"I think that's been an ongoing assumption with law enforcement," he said, adding that the case remains "open and active."

Images of investigators combing through the wreckage of Josh Powell’s destroyed home, as well as what is believed to be his final voicemail and 911 calls from the day of the explosion were all released Tuesday.
One of the 911 tapes is from the caseworker who drove the boys to Powell's house and witnessed the explosion.
“Hey, I’m on a supervised visitation for a court-ordered visit and something really weird just happened,” the woman said to the 911 dispatcher. “The kids went into the house and the parent – the biological parent – whose name is Josh Powell – will not let me in the door.”
The tapes revealed confusion by the 911 dispatcher as to who was present at the house and who was supervising the visit. The call lasted 6 minutes and 46 seconds.
After the explosion, the caseworker called back and said, "There’s two little boys in the house. They’re 5 and 7 and there’s an adult male. He has supervised visitation and he blew up the house and the kids!"

With Josh Powell dead, police from West Valley City, Utah, who have been investigating Susan Powell’s disappearance, have turned their focus to Steven Powell, Josh’s father.
Investigators said Tuesday they consider Steven Powell a “person of interest” in Susan’s disappearance, though there is no evidence to suggest Steven was involved in her disappearance or murder.
“My definition is not that he’s a suspect, but that a person of interest is somebody that we want to talk to that might give us some leads and information,” West Valley City police Chief Buzz Nielsen said.

Police from West Valley City and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on a storage unit in Pierce County owned by Josh Powell on Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Police were tight-lipped about the location of the unit, but the Sheriff’s Office told KIRO 7 news partner The News Tribune they weren’t looking for any specific items.
