GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY, Washington —

Two women told KIRO 7 they thought the house they were in would collapse early Tuesday morning when the ex-boyfriend of one of the women repeatedly rammed the home with a young child inside.

It was about 2 a.m. when Karen Merritt’s ex-boyfriend showed up without warning, drove his pickup truck through the side yard and into the back, and began ramming the house, police said.

“It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever been through,” Merritt said. “It felt like the house was gonna cave in. It was shaking.”

Merritt’s friend, Brittani Marshall, grabbed her 7-month-old daughter, Jordin, and held on.

“I was holding her tight, close to me and stuff, and I was really scared, and I didn’t know what was going to happen to Karen, either,” Marshall said.

Each time the truck hit, it did more damage.

“Finally, I ran outside and opened up his passenger door and pleaded with him to stop, stop,” Merritt said.

That’s when the man, who police identified as Trevor Hammond, rammed and totaled Merritt’s car, a Buick Regal, and drove off.

Merritt and Marshall said they can’t believe what Hammond is accused of doing.

“I was in total shock he would do anything like this,” Merritt said.

“How could he do that to anybody, especially when there is a baby here?” Marshall said.

Damage to the home is estimated to be at least $10,000.

Hammond’s truck was found abandoned Tuesday near McCleary, but he hadn’t been found.
