MASON COUNTY, Washington —

A man who was assaulted during what he thought was a drug deal Monday has died, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office said.

Shawn Joseph Morrow, 23, of Shelton, died at about 3 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Two Shelton men accused in the attack – Stephen R.C. Churchill, 29, and Travis Carl Blaze, 28 -- are expected to be charged with murder in the next few days.

The attack Monday afternoon at the public fishing area near the Bayshore Golf Course, police said. Churchill and Blaze had contacted Morrow and arranged to sell him heroin. Morrow only expected to meet with Blaze and didn’t know Churchill was nearby. When Morrow went to meet Blaze, Churchill stepped out of an outdoor toilet, approached Morrow from behind and hit him in the head at least twice with a metal baseball bat.

Morrow fell to the ground and was critically injured, police said. Churchill took $45 in cash from Morrow and left with Blaze.

Morrow made his way to his vehicle and drove across the street to the Bayshore Grocery store, investigators said. Passers-by found him and called police.

Churchill and Blaze were found by investigators at a home near Lake Limerick earlier this week. They’re currently being held on $350,000 and $250,000 bail, respectively.
