KIRKLAND, Wash. —
A 49-year-old man wanted in the slaying of his ex-wife killed her because he didn't want to pay her $70,000 from his pension, investigators say.
Police tracked Scott Kagawa, 49, to Kirkland, where officers searched woods near Northeast 128th Street and 113th Avenue Northeast on Monday.
That's where Kagawa's trail ends, according to court documents prepared by investigators.
Rita Kagawa disappeared in May. Her body was found off Highway 510 near Yelm last month.
According to investigators, Scott Kagawa left a car parked near a relative's house in Kirkland. He also left a six-page suicide note, a cell phone and a bank card.
Scott Kagawa's white Chevy was seen at Rita's Spanaway apartment, according to court documents.
Investigators said that after the murder, he borrowed his current wife's maroon SUV to move the body.
Both cars were parked at Scott Kagawa's house near Spanaway Thursday night, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Grande. No one answered the front door.
Scott Kagawa was ordered to pay his ex-wife $70,000 he owed her from his pension.
Police said that after the murder, he pretended to be Rita -- sending emails to her attorney, trying to get the court case thrown out.
