SEATTLE —

A drive-by shooting occurred in South Seattle overnight a day after police announced their new summer plan to fight crime.

The shooting happened at about 1 a.m. Wednesday at a house on South Holden Street that police said is a known gang hangout.

The house was empty and no one was hurt, but the gunfire adds to the growing concern about increasing violence in the city.

In an announcement Tuesday, Seattle police said the new plan identifies problem locations and increases police presence.

Police say the plan already seems to be working.

“Just by focusing on those very small hot spots, (there was) roughly a 60 percent reduction in 911 calls in just that first week,” said James Dermody with Seattle police.

So far, there have been 22 slayings in Seattle this year.  That number surpasses the total for all of last year.

Officers said that increase is part of the reason for the crime-fighting plan.

Officers will get out of their patrol cars and walk around and talk to people.  They hope the increased police presence will help deter crime.

On Monday, a group held a peace protest in front of City Hall, calling for help to stop the violence.
