SEATTLE —
Second-degree murder charges were filed Friday against the man arrested a day earlier in connection with the May shooting death of Justin Ferrari in Seattle's Central District.
Andrew J. Patterson, 20, was involved in an altercation with someone on May 24 when he fired several shots across a street near the intersection of East Cherry Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to probable cause documents. One of those shots struck Ferrari in the head as he drove through an intersection with his parents and two young kids in the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Patterson's girlfriend told KIRO 7 police had arrested the wrong person.
"I know the day, May 24, 2012, he was with me, at home," Shyla Comer said. "They got the wrong man. He's innocent."
Detectives worked for the last two months to track Patterson down. Investigators said they connected him to the crime through surveillance video, tips and witness testimony, as well as video of Patterson that is posted online. "This case is the result of outstanding investigative work by detectives with the Seattle Police Department who were relentless in their pursuit of the suspect," King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg stated in a news release.
Prosecutors filed a firearm enhancement with the murder charge against Patterson. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 15 to 23 years in prison.
Patternson remains jailed on $2 million bail. He's scheduled to be arraigned August 2. Comer said she'll be there.
