REDMOND, Wash. —

Police said a disturbing new trend on the Eastside is bringing double trouble to some who just wanted to have a night out at the movies.

A couple who was seeing a movie at a Redmond theater came out to the parking lot to discover that thieves had broken into their car.

When Redmond police discovered their vehicle registration was gone from the glove box, they immediately guessed that thieves had burglarized the couple’s home as well.

Police sent a sheriff’s deputy to the home, who discovered the break in.

Debbie and Gary Van Wieringen arrived home to find the front door damaged.

“They broke this whole section of glass,” Debbie Van Wieringen showed KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Graham Johnson.

Their carpet is stained from police fingerprinting, and there are remaining signs of the rampage by burglars.

“They basically pulled all these drawers out,” said Van Wieringen.

The burglars were looking for jewelry.

“They were looking for gold I think. That was their main focus,” said Van Wieringen. “It’s pretty sad when you go to a movie and now they're breaking into your cars to get to your house.”

The King County Sheriff’s Office said there were at least two similar cases on the Eastside in about the last month.

“It’s just a new way for home invasion. Get into people's homes. Get them while they're at the movie.  They know they have a two-hour window they know they can pull anything out they want,” said Wieringen.

A spokeswoman with the King County Sheriff's Office said because of these burglaries, deputies now suggest carrying your registration with you or putting it somewhere in your car other than your glove compartment.

Police say if you're pulled over, you'll want to talk with the officer first before reaching for it.
