SEATAC, Wash. —

A deputy shot a man who police said robbed and punched another man inside a SeaTac mosque, stole the victim's car and barreled toward an officer.

King County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Cindi West said that shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, a man went inside Seatac Masjid  at 30th Avenue South and South 150th Street to pray and found a man sleeping inside.

Startled, the sleeping man jumped up and began punching the victim, police said.

The attacker took the man’s car keys and wallet.  The victim said he threw a bag at the robber to distract him and was able to get away and call police.

By the time officers arrived, the robber had gotten into the victim’s car which was parked behind the building, police said.

West said the driver sped around the corner, driving toward a female officer, who had to run to avoid the speeding vehicle.

"He was flying around the corner -- aggressively, not just slowly, but he was aggressively trying to strike her," West said.

At that point, another officer shot and hit the driver.

Police said the car continued on and hit a neighbor’s fence and then overturned in the yard.

The robber was shot in the shoulder and transported to Harborview Medical Center.

No officers were injured, West said.

West said the robber has documented mental health issues.
