SEATTLE —
Steven Powell, Josh Powell’s father, may be the last hope for new information in the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell.
Now that Josh Powell is dead – killed in what police said was a double murder-suicide at his Graham home Sunday, which involved his two sons – investigators from West Valley City, Utah, were Susan Powell disappeared, have focused on Steven with the hope of generating new leads.
“We just want to talk to him,” West Valley City police Chief Buzz Nielsen said. “They lived in the house (in Puyallup, Washington) together and there are some things we want to ask him.”
Police on Tuesday revealed for the first time that Susan's disapperance had become a murder investigation in the last several months.
Before his arrest on child pornography and voyeurism charges, the 62-year-old Steven Powell often acted as a spokesman for his son, who was considered by police to be the only person of interest in Susan’s disappearance. Steven issued a statement on August 19 last year that he and Josh believed Susan was still alive.
West Valley City investigators have accused Steven of taking pictures of Susan, without her knowledge, as she undressed. Those officials have also called Steven a person of interest in the case of Susan’s disappearance, but police said there is no evidence suggesting he took part in her disappearance or murder.
“My definition is not that he’s a suspect, but that a person of interest is somebody that we want to talk to that might give us some leads and information,” Nielsen said.
