Raw Audio: Recordings of first responders at Powell home explosion

SEATTLE —

Emergency scanner traffic is shedding new light on just how fast first responders came to realize what had happened at Josh Powell’s home when it exploded Sunday.

Powell and his two sons were killed in the blast, which police said was intentionally rigged by Powell.

A YouTube channel called firefighterdispatch posted a recording of scanner traffic that day, in which a 911 dispatcher can be heard talking to first responders as they headed to the home.

About 2 minutes and 10 seconds into the recording, responders tell the dispatcher they can see a “visible plume of smoke” coming from near the home. The dispatcher responds that she’d received reports multiple explosions and then tells firefighters to “be careful.”

At about 4:00, the dispatcher says it’s “unknown if (the home) is occupied” and says it “could be a meth house.”

By 4:48, with information from the Child Protective Services worker who took Powell’s boys to the home, the dispatcher tells responders the CPS worker was, “indicating they believe this was an intentional fire. The (person) providing this information is a CPS worker for those residents.”

Finally, at 5:10, the dispatcher says, “The CPS worker that deals with this residence – they believe that the fire was intentionally set. She is at scene. She believes that the dad and two children, ages 5 and 7, are inside the house.”
