SEATTLE —
Several streets in the U-District were shut down late Tuesday morning while police negotiated with an assault suspect, the Seattle Police Department said.
Officers went to the University Baptist Church at about 11 a.m. after receiving reports of the attack. A church staff member told police the couple got into an argument and the man punched his girlfriend and took their 4-month-old child, police said. A staff member tried to intervene and the man punched him, too.
The man left the church and police arrived. Negotiators convinced the man to hand over the child, and he was taken into custody.
15th Avenue Northeast was shut down from Northeast 47th Street to Northeast 50th Street while negotiations with the man were ongoing. The streets reopened at about noon.
Medics treated everyone at the scene, and the mother and child were taken to a hospital, police said.
The man was expected to be booked into the King County Jail for domestic violence assault and assault, police said.
