MAPLE VALLEY, Washington —

Vandals hit a new low over the weekend as they drilled through a wall to rob a Maple Valley food bank for less than $20 worth of food.

The hole was just large enough for someone to squeeze through. The vandals even put a tarp down to protect their knees as they drilled.

“This is the only portion of the building that isn’t sensored and alarmed, so they knew what they were doing,” Maple Valley Food Bank board member Bruce Amer said.

The intruders struck sometime Friday night after the food bank closed. Employees spotted the damage Saturday morning.

Once inside, the vandals continued cutting through sheet metal, insulation and a cooler, and finally got inside a walk-in freezer.

“They could have easily just opened the door and walked out and walked in, rather than damaging our cooler,” food bank board member Marilyn Amer said.

Repairs could top $5,000.

The food bank has insurance, but it also has to pay its deductible.

All that’s missing are a few cartons of milk and eggs, which were set aside for several families in the area.

“Today, some people don’t get milk because four cases were gone,” Amer said. “That’s how it works.”

He said condensation on the building from the freezer made it tough for police to lift any fingerprints, but they did collect some evidence.
