Cross-Country Move Leaves Roommates Without Belongings

SEATTLE —

It's the busy season for moving, and two West Seattle women want to share their tale of woe in the hopes that what happened to them won't happen to you.

"We've been in Seattle since May 29 and, as you can see, we don't have any of our things yet," said Karlene Clapp.

Clapp and roommate Renee Rodak really want to fill their new West Seattle home with all their belongings.

Trouble is, their belongings haven't been delivered -- even though they moved here from back east a month ago.

"I had an entire three bedroom house back in Indiana, where I lived. I had a full living room, entire kitchen," said Rodak.

"Full bedroom suite, recliners, you name it," said Clapp.

"Brand new tools I just got for Christmas, " said Rodak.

"Weight bench -- our entire lives were in that truck," said Clapp

Clapp and Rodak hired American Moving Services, a South Carolina-based to truck their belongings from Indiana to Seattle.

They were told their furniture, clothes and personal items -- more than $25,000 worth -- would arrive in four to 10 days.

It didn't.

"I called several times. They finally called back and said, 'Oh, it's in Iowa. It'll be three to five more days,'" said Rodak.

It wasn't three to five days.

During another frustrating phone call they were told it would be delivered soon -- but still, no furniture.

"Yesterday I received a phone call from the subcontracted company stating that they went bankrupt and I need to make arrangements to pick my stuff up in a storage unit in Canton, Ohio," said Rodak.

That's right. American Moving Services had sold the roommates' contract to a company called Bulldog Moving.

Such subcontracting, American says, is standard in the industry and is detailed on the roommate's contract.

But Bulldog has been kicked out of the Better Business Bureau and is no longer licensed to carry goods.

Something the Better Business Bureau now warns potential customers of.

But something American says was unknown to them -- unknown to Rodak and Clapp as well.

"We had no reason to believe they weren't reputable. We even looked at their Web site after they picked up the stuff and they did have the BBB logo on their Web site. We had no idea they'd been kicked out over a year ago," Clapp said.

"Now, our stuff is in storage and it's actually being held because the storage company can't let it go because their contract is with Bulldog, and Bulldog isn't releasing it," Rodak said. "And they're also not talking to anyone."

KIRO 7 tried to get answers from Bulldog, but calls were not returned.

And American Moving Services says because Bulldog apparently dumped the goods in a storage unit in Ohio and paid unit rental fees through July 1, no one can legally access Clapp and Rodak's belongings at least until then.

Meanwhile, they've both started new jobs in Seattle.

"I had to go buy new clothes," Clapp said.

"I've had a cough for three weeks now, so sleeping on the floor hasn't really helped that," said Rodak. The roommates have hired an attorney.

"I don't think anyone's looking out for our interest in getting our stuff here. As far as we're concerned, they can work out the legalities later. But we need to get our stuff," said Clapp.

A spokesman for American moving services tells me the FBI and Ohio attorney general are now investigating bulldog and that American is working to get the roommates' stuff back, but he doesn't know how long that'll take.

He says Rodak and Clapp will be refunded their deposit, won't have to pay any moving costs, but that their belongings are mixed with others' who were apparently defrauded by Bulldog and he can't guarantee all their stuff will be returned.
