Database unveiled to protect families of military

WASHINGTON, D.C. —

The state of Washington has a high military population, and a new database came out Sunday that will protect the military and their families from criminal acts against them.

The new tool will store information about people who target men and women servicing the country, including veterans.

Holly Petreaus, the wife of the Central Intelligence Agency’s director David Petreus, said the military checks draw attention to con artists.

“That big pot of money can be attractive to scammers,” said Petreaus. “I heard one description that they cluster outside military installations like bears at a trout stream.”

Federal and local law enforcement agencies will use the data and nationally share the findings.

According to the database’s website, Consumer Sentinel and Military, is part of the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database of millions of consumer complaints, operated by the Federal Trade Commission.

The database is not for public access but the government has resources to help the military against fraudulent online activity.

For more information about the database can be found here: http://www.ftc.gov/sentinel/military/.
