The Department of Defense statement provided to KIRO Team 7 Investigators

Regarding its efforts to reduce obesity among military dependents

"The Department of Defense is committed to ensuring military family members continue to be better informed about how to make healthy lifestyle choices.  This includes choosing healthy foods while shopping, knowing how to prepare healthy snacks and meals together as a family, being physically active and reducing screen time for young children.  Children who get 60 minutes a day of active play versus participating in passive activities reduce the impact of this national challenge in other areas, such as its effects on our nation's recruiting population.

About 35% of American youth are disqualified from military service for medical reasons, the majority of those related to obesity.  This national epidemic can only be solved through a national effort -- government, schools and families have a role. The First Lady is leading a collaborative effort with HHS, Dept of Agriculture and Department of Education letsmove.gov.   DoD has adopted several of the initiative's practices and will continue to support the need for increased physical fitness and improved wellness initiatives through its extensive wellness programs on all its installations."
