Deputy Fired Over Jail Cell Incident Caught On Camera

SEATTLE —

A King County sheriff's deputy accused of beating a teenage girl in a jail cell was fired earlier this month, the sheriff's office said Monday.

A jail cell surveillance camera showed the incident last November in which Deputy Paul Schene went after the 15-year-old after she threw her shoe at him.

The video footage showed her being kicked, hit and slammed to the floor of a jail cell by the deputy.

Malika's great-grandfather, Charles Calhoun, said his family believes the deputy’s attack was racially motivated.

“Did you see how he slammed her up against, in the room? He slammed her up against the thing and pretended that she kicked him with a tennis shoe?" Calhoun said.

In addition to use of excessive force, Schene's superiors found him responsible for making false or fraudulent statements, engaged in criminal conduct, used his authority inappropriately and discriminated against the girl.

“The incident is obviously very tough on our department. Nobody wants our people to be engaged in this sort of behavior and I think the videotape speaks for itself," said Sgt. John Urquhart of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Sue Rahr upheld the ruling and Schene's termination was effective Sept. 9.

He’ll be on trial for fourth-degree assault next month where Malika Calhoun will testify.

Schene's attorney said he has no comment about the decision.
