SEATTLE —

The widow of King County sheriff's Deputy Richard Herzog swore at his killer in court Thursday in Seattle and said the pain he caused would never end.

"Matthews took everything from me and my family, but he could not ever take away my love for Richard or Richard's love for me," said Sunchu Herzog, weeping in a court hearing at the sentencing for her husband's killer.

Herzog's family had the chance to address Ronald Keith Matthews before he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

In his turn to speak, Matthews apologized for the killing.

He was convicted in August of aggravated first-degree murder for the shooting two years ago in the Newcastle area near Bellevue. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty because of Matthews' history of mental illness.

Matthews had been running naked through traffic and Herzog tried to subdue him with pepper spray.

As the men scuffled, Matthews grabbed the deputy's gun and shot him several times, point blank, in the head.
