Detective Critically Injured By Suspected Drunken Driver

KENMORE, Wash. —

A King County sheriff's detective is in critical condition Monday after a crash involving a suspected drunken driver, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Deputies said the 56-year-old detective was driving home on his motorcycle after Saturday night's Torchlight Parade when a truck broadsided him in Kenmore.

The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the 6200 block of Northeast Bothell Way.

Police said the 36-year-old Phoenix man, a roofer who is working in Washington, was pulling out of the Cozy Tavern's parking lot when he hit the motorcycle.

“He hit the deputy broadside, so he actually hit the deputy, the deputy did not hit him,” said John Urquhart of the King County sheriff's office.

The prosecutor said the bartender stopped serving the driver because he was too intoxicated.

According to court documents, the driver’s breath “smelled heavily of alcoholic beverage,” and that the man confessed to “having too many.” Police said he had to be “held up to avoid falling over,” and that “his eyes were bloodshot and his pupils dilated.”

The man was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault. His bail is set at $250,000.

The detective, who is assigned to Metro Transit, has been with the sheriff’s office for 23 years.

Doctors said the victim will most likely lose his leg.
