Dozens Flee Apartment Building Fire

SEATTLE —

Smoke filled a Capitol Hill apartment building Tuesday, setting off alarm bells and sending dozens of residents running outside, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

The fire at the building on 12th Avenue East and East Howell Street apparently started in a first-floor apartment and shot up through a vent into the attic.

One resident had just enough time to grab her frightened cat.

"I could smell the fire so I knew it was real," said Heidi Boman. "I dragged her by her tail and threw her in this case."

Everybody in the building made it out OK, but a few people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
