Drunken Driver Back In Court

BELLEVUE, Wash. —

Drunken driver Susan West was back in court Monday morning, but was not prepared to enter a plea in the case, and instead asked the judge to do it.

The judge entered “not guilty” pleas on West’s behalf.

Judge Janet Garrow began Monday’s arraignment and bail hearing by asking West about her financial status to determine whether she'd qualify for a public defender.

West told the judge most of the money she had would be going toward bail.

West was arrested just over a week ago one block from her home on charges of drunken driving and driving with a suspended license.

Her court appearance last week had to be postponed because West was still in detox.

West’s attorney, Howard Stein, would not comment on why he had the judge, rather than West, enter the not guilty pleas. The judge kept West’s bail at $150,000.

“She is not guilty and if we represent her, we are going to establish that in front of a judge and jury, and not the press,” said Stein.

West had nothing to say to the media as she was escorted by Bellevue police out of district court.

Shackled at the wrists and ankles, West was locked into a white van to be driven back to the King County Jail in Seattle.

Susan West killed Mary Johnsen in 1997. Johnsen and her husband were walking on the Sammamish Plateau when West, who was driving drunk, plowed into her. West served six years in prison and just finished probation in January.

“Some people don’t seem to learn. All we can do is hope it doesn’t happen again because of the danger to the public,” said Bellevue City Prosecutor Susan Irwin.

West’s pretrial hearing is set for July 12 at the Bellevue District Court. If she is found guilty, the maximum West could do in jail is one year and 90 days.
