1-Day Strike Closes Shoreline Schools

SHORELINE, Wash. —

Schools are closed in the Shoreline District Thursday because of a one-day strike by teachers.

The teachers said they are unhappy with the way the district moved some elementary students in response to overcrowded classes.

Six hundred teachers hit the picket lines for the strike that caused district officials to close school for the day.

"We're really sorry for the inconvenience this makes for our parents and families. And we hope they understand. We'll be back here on Friday," said Craig Degginer, a school district spokesman.

Many parents said they are frustrated with the decision.

"I don't know if going on a one-day strike is the appropriate way to do it. There are other ways because the kids are affected by this one-day strike, and the school board probably isn't going to be affected by the one-day strike," said Cherry Brady, the parent of a student in the district.

The district said the day will be made up next June.
