220 Employees Receive Layoff Notices In Bethel School District

SPANAWAY, Wash. —

More than 200 employees, most of them teachers, got layoff notices in one of the largest school districts in Pierce County.

Parents still have an opportunity to let the Bethel School District hear from them before those teachers are fired.

The 220 notices were sent out to staff members Tuesday at more than two dozen Bethel schools. That means layoffs are right around the corner

“I think it's kind of sad because I just got laid off too, a couple of weeks ago. I think it's just sad because my kid goes here and she really loves it,” said parent Tammy Collins.

The vast majority of those receiving the notices are teachers, but Bethel officials said getting a notice doesn't guarantee job loss.

By state law all schools must notify district employees that might be laid off no later than May 15.

With funds running low, school board members said saving even a few of the positions on the chopping block may be next to impossible.

“The problem is right now is the economic climate and we're struggling to fill a $10 million gap,” said Bethel Schools spokeswoman Krista Carlson.

Bethel schools will hold public forums where parents will have their chance to let board members know how they feel about the planned job cuts.

The first is May 7 at North Star Elementary and May 21 at Camas Elementary. Both forums start at 7 p.m.
